Itinerary
DAY ONE
This morning we’ll depart Accra and make our way towards the Volta Region. On our way we will visit a local Krobo village to learn about the local tradition of making glass beads. You will even have the chance to make your own! We will then continue the trip to the village of Amedzofe, the highest village in Ghana, and home to a former German monastery. From Amedzofe you will wander to the top of Mount Gemi, where you will watch the sunset over the Volta Region with Lake Volta in the distance.
DAY TWO
This morning we will visit the nearby village of Tafi Atome, where mona monkeys live in close proximity to the local population. The Tafi Atome Monkey Sanctuary was formed as part of a Peace Corps initiative to bring sustainable tourism development to the village. After wandering through the sanctuary to meet the various groups of monkeys, you will continue your journey north to the Wli, home to West Africa’s tallest waterfall.
DAY THREE
It’s time to explore Wli Falls! After entering the reserve, a short walk will bring you to the lower fall, and a 90-minute hike will bring you to the upper fall, where you can splash in the pool below. This evening you can enjoy an evening reception at the hotel with a cultural performance by the local people of Wli.
DAY FOUR
After breakfast we will travel to the town of Akosombo, near the dam that created Lake Volta. Lake Volta is the largest man made lake in Africa, and the dam supplies a great deal of electricity to Ghana. Today we will explore the lake by canoe.
DAY FIVE
This morning you will make your way west toward Cape Coast, the bustling former colonial city that is known for its UNESCO World Heritage slave castles and palm-lined beaches. This evening you will climb to the top of the Fort Williams lighthouse to take in the sunset over Cape Coast and observe the lively, buzzing streets below.
DAY SIX
After breakfast your Uprise driver will take you outside of Cape Coast to Kakum National Park, home to one of Ghana’s tropical rainforests, and home to 400 bird species, butterflies, and other flora and fauna species. A park ranger will escort you across the seven bridges that connect some of Kakum’s largest trees and hang thirty meters above the forest floor.
After lunch we will head west to the fishing village of Elmina, home to St. George’s Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Built in 1482, the Castle also happens to be the first European building in Sub-Saharan Africa. Your guide will teach you about the history of slavery and the introduction of Europeans to West Africa. Finally, you will head to the beach for an evening of relaxation.
DAY SEVEN
This morning we will drive West from Cape Coast toward Busua, home to a beach reputed to be the best in Ghana. Today you will have a chance to relax on the beach and take in the peace and quiet of Ghana’s Western Region.
DAY EIGHT
Today is your last day on the beach! Enjoy it while it lasts.
DAY NINE
This morning we will make our way back to Accra, waving goodbye to places we visited along the way. Depending on your flight time, we may stop for souvenirs at the Accra Arts Centre, or a enjoy a city tour of Accra.
