Itinerary
Day 1
When you arrive in Accra, the bustling capital of Ghana, you will be greeted with a smile by an Uprise staff member, who will take you to a comfortable hotel outside the city.
Depending on your arrival time, we may have a small cultural orientation to help you get quickly accustomed to life in Ghana. If you are traveling with a larger group, you may see a cultural performance to showcase the beauty and history of Ghana.
Day 2
After breakfast this morning your Uprise driver will take you to Cape Coast, the former capital city of Ghana known for its windy streets, colonial architecture, and UNESCO World Heritage slave castle. On the way, you will take a quick stop in Anumabu to stand among colorful fishing boats as you watch the local fisherman at work drying and preserving their fish. After lunch in Cape Coast, you will enter the Cape Coast Castle, built by the Swedes in 1653. Your castle guide will take you on a moving journey through the rooms formerly occupied by slaves bound for the New World. This castle also houses the West African Historical Museum. Later this evening we will hike to the Fort Williams lighthouse to watch the sunset over Cape Coast.
Day 3
After breakfast your Uprise driver will take you outside of Cape Coast to Kakum National Park, home to one of Ghana’s tropical rainforests, and home to 400 bird species, butterflies, and other flora and fauna species. A park ranger will escort you across the seven bridges that connect some of Kakum’s largest trees and hang thirty meters above the forest floor. After descending from the canopy we will take a 2 km nature walk through this forest to discover the wide variety of floral species and their medicinal values. This afternoon you have the option to visit Elmina Castle (entrance fee not included in the price of the trip) or head west to your beachside accommodation.
Day 4
After days of flights, car rides and exploration, you have earned this day on the beach! Today you are free to enjoy quiet time on the beach or talk with you Uprise guide about other activities in the area.
Day 5
After breakfast you will head farther west down quiet roads into Ghana’s Western Region. After passing through sleepy coastal communities you will arrive in Busua, home to a beach described by many as the best beach in Ghana. You will also have a chance to explore nearby Dix Cove, a typical fishing village of the Western Region. You will have the option to wander the local market in Dix Cove or visit a colonial fort in the area.
Day 6
Today you will make your way back to Accra, waving goodbye to all of the cities and towns you saw on your journey west, and stopping for a casual lunch along the way. In the afternoon you will arrive in Accra and settle once again into your hotel before going out to explore this growing capital city.
Day 7
This morning you will tour Accra with your guide. In addition to observing Accra’s blend of colonial and modern architecture, you will visit the Independence/Black Star Square, Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park, W. E. B. Dubois Center for Pan African Culture, and the Accra Arts Center, where you will have an opportunity to use your bargaining skills to shop for artifacts from all parts of Ghana. This evening you will say goodbye to your guide at the airport, or wherever your next destination may be.
Packing List
The Uprise team is happy to assist you with your luggage, but feel free to pack light and keep it simple!
- We highly recommend that you speak with your doctor about about antimalarial medications or any vaccinations that he or she may suggest.
- If your trip includes a safari, please include darker, more neutral-colored clothing in order to avoid scaring off the animals.
